Making the decision to get an abortion
Abortion is legal in Colorado at all stages of pregnancy. There are no term restrictions as to when a pregnancy can be terminated. On July 6, 2022, Gov. Jared Polis issued an Executive Order that declares: “No one who is lawfully providing, assisting, seeking, or obtaining reproductive health care in Colorado should be subject to legal liability or professional sanctions in Colorado or any other state, nor will Colorado cooperate with criminal or civil investigations for actions that are fully legal in our State.”
Colorado does not require a waiting period between pregnancy options counseling and having an abortion. Early in pregnancy, everything can be completed in one day. Later in pregnancy, the process of dilating (opening) the cervix before an abortion can take 2-3 days.
Abortion is a safe way to terminate a pregnancy. While abortion is not entirely risk-free, the earlier in the pregnancy that the abortion takes place, the safer the procedure is for the patient. Your doctor will discuss all possible risks and complications prior to the procedure.
When recovering from either a medical or surgical abortion, you will feel period-like pain and cramping. Usually, there is more pain experienced the further along a patient is in the pregnancy. Your doctor can talk about pain medications and pain management options before the procedure.
The cost of an abortion can vary depending on the type and how far along a patient is in their pregnancy. View our pricing information.
Colorado requires most state-regulated health insurance plans to cover abortion services. If you’re unsure whether your plan includes this coverage, we can help verify your eligibility.
Colorado Medicaid will pay for any abortion, elective or medically indicated, at any gestational age.
Payment plans are not available, but please see the self-pay funding options on our pricing information page.
No, but if you are under 18 years of age, we will need to notify at least one parent or guardian before you can obtain an abortion. If you do not wish to tell your parents about the pregnancy, you can go to court to obtain a waiver from the judge, which would allow you to have an abortion without parental notification.
As long as there are no complications with the procedure, such as infection or injury to the uterus or cervix, having an abortion will not decrease your chances of getting pregnant in the future.
Colorado is one of the few states where abortion can be obtained after 20 weeks of pregnancy. CRHC offers in-clinic abortion care up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. If your pregnancy is beyond 22 weeks and you are considering having an abortion, please call to speak with one of our nurses. We will review your unique circumstances to ensure that we can offer you safe abortion care in the right setting. This may include caring for you at a hospital or referring you to another specialized abortion care provider.
No, having an abortion does not increase the chances of getting breast cancer.
Treatment Options
Types of Abortion: Medication vs. Surgical
There are two main types of abortion: medication abortion and surgical abortion. The best option depends on how far along the pregnancy is, your health history, and your personal preferences. Visit our Medication vs. Surgical Abortion page for an overview of each option to help you understand what to expect.
A surgical abortion can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to perform. After the procedure, you will recover in the doctor’s office for a few hours and can usually go home the same day. Your doctor will provide you with aftercare instructions. Abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy may require an overnight stay in the hospital.
After the abortion procedure
Most patients return to normal activity within a day or so. You may experience vaginal bleeding or spotting for a few days after the procedure. Your doctor will provide you with a specific set of aftercare instructions for both a medication abortion and a surgical abortion.
It is recommended that you refrain from sex for at least 1-2 weeks after the procedure. You can get pregnant again immediately after the procedure, so it is important that you discuss birth control options with your doctor.
It is recommended that you use pads for at least 2 weeks after the abortion procedure. Tampon use may be resumed for your next period.
A subsequent pregnancy can occur immediately after an abortion. You should discuss contraception with your provider during the termination process.
