Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy at a glance
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions inside the uterus, most commonly abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Performed using a hysteroscope (a thin, lighted device with a camera)
- No incisions required
- Typically completed in 30 minutes to 1 hour
- Performed as an outpatient procedure
- Allows diagnosis and treatment in a single visit
At the Comprehensive Reproductive Health Center, hysteroscopy is a safe, efficient way to evaluate and treat uterine conditions with minimal downtime.
What is hysteroscopy?
A hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows a doctor to view the inside of the uterus using a thin, telescope-like device called a hysteroscope. The device is inserted through the vagina and cervix, so no surgical incisions are needed.
Doctors may recommend hysteroscopy when imaging tests like ultrasound do not provide a clear diagnosis, or when treatment is needed at the same time.
Common Uses of Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy can be used for both diagnosis and treatment. It may be recommended to:
- Evaluate abnormal uterine bleeding
- Remove uterine fibroids, polyps, or scar tissue
- Investigate postmenopausal bleeding
- Examine the structure of the uterus
- Perform a biopsy
- Locate or remove a misplaced IUD
- Treat intrauterine adhesions
What to Expect During a Hysteroscopy Procedure
Before the Procedure
- Usually scheduled after your period and before ovulation
- You may receive local anesthesia, sedation, or no anesthesia, depending on your case
During the Procedure
- The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus
- A sterile saline solution expands the uterus for better visibility
- The doctor views the uterus on a video monitor
- Small instruments may be used to remove or treat tissue if needed
After the Procedure
- Most patients go home the same day
- If sedation or anesthesia is used, a short recovery time in the clinic may be required
- Mild cramping or light bleeding is common for a few days
Benefits of Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy offers several advantages over traditional surgery:
- No incisions or scarring
- Outpatient procedure (no hospital stay)
- Short recovery time
- Lower risk of infection and complications
- Less need for pain medication
- Ability to diagnose and treat in one visit
Risks and Side Effects of Hysteroscopy
Hysteroscopy is generally very safe. Fewer than 2% of patients experience complications.
Possible Risks Include:
- Reaction to anesthesia (if used)
- Infection
- Excessive bleeding
- Injury to the uterus
- Damage to the surrounding tissue
- Reaction to the fluid used to expand the uterus
Your provider will discuss these risks and ensure you are fully informed before your procedure.
