What Is a Medication Abortion?
A medication abortion (abortion pill) is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy using two FDA‑approved medications:
- Mifepristone (Mifeprex): weakens the attachment of the pregnancy to the uterus
- Misoprostol (Cytotec): taken later to cause uterine cramping and expel the pregnancy
Medication abortion is available from around 5 weeks 4 days to 10 weeks 6 days* of pregnancy, based on the first day of your last menstrual period and confirmed by ultrasound.
*Information provided on this website is for general purposes only. All decisions about eligibility for abortion care will be made after consultation with a healthcare provider.
Now offering telehealth options
Comprehensive Reproductive Health Center is now offering telehealth medication abortion services. The abortion medication will be mailed to you following your telehealth visit with one of our doctors. Patients must reside in Colorado to be eligible. Please call 303-724-8576 for more information on telehealth medication abortion services.
How the Abortion Pill Works
The process happens in two steps:
- Take mifepristone in the clinic to stop the pregnancy from progressing
- Take misoprostol at home (6 to 48 hours later) to complete the abortion
Most patients experience:
- Cramping and bleeding, often heavier than a period
- Bleeding lasts 9 to 16 days on average
- Symptoms similar to a heavy menstrual cycle
Is Medication Abortion Safe?
Medication abortion is a safe and highly effective option for early pregnancy. However:
- About 5% of patients may need a follow-up surgical abortion
- A follow-up visit or phone call is recommended to confirm that the abortion is complete
- If the pregnancy continues, the medication may cause serious birth defects
